The Barren World is the surrounding area that the player may explore by embarking from The Dusty Path.

The World is represented by an overhead map with the player's village placed at the center. The player is represented by an "@", and can navigate the map with either the WASD keys or the Arrow keys.

The overhead map is populated by ASCII characters, each of which represent a different type of terrain.

Warnings[]

Players will receive a warning if they travel too far without adequate protection. [1][2]

Fight chance[]

Check for fight will be called with minimum interval of 3 moves between fights[3].

  • The base chance to encounter a fight is 20%.[4].
  • The chance to encounter fight with stealthy perk drops to 10%.[5]
  • After the fight check is passed you will encounter a random enemy, but only from encounters available to you[6].
  • Fights will not be encountered on road spaces.

Worldgen[]

World Generation is the world you start in. World size is 61 by 61[7].

Your village is located at cell [31, 31].

; FOREST Empty tile.
, FIELD Empty tile.

Set pieces[8][]

See also code relevant to world generation[9][10].

An Outpost (P)[]

0 generated by worldgen.

A safe clearing that refills the avatar's water supply, and provides the avatar with 5-10 Cured Meats. Outposts can only be utilized once for each journey out into the Barren World, but are replenished once the avatar returns back to their village. Clearing dangerous areas creates Outposts and makes Roads back to the Village. Traveling back over a depleted outpost, while providing no benefits, does not consume water.

A Murky Swamp (M)[]

1 generated by worldgen.

You can meet the Lone Wanderer here. If you give him a Charm you will receive the Gastronome perk. It will be useful during combat.

A Damp Cave (V)[]

5 generated by worldgen.

Caves contain a few low HP creatures and, very often, a useful store of items such as Iron and Coal at the end. Once clear, the cave will turn into an Outpost (P).

A Deserted Town (O)[]

10 generated by worldgen.

Here the player can encounter a Street Thug, a Hiding Scavenger, a Park Beast, a Shadow Thug, a Classroom Beast, a Hidden Beast, a Panicked Scavenger, and/or Vigilante, as well as receive a random assortment of loot or rewards. Once conquered, the Deserted Town will turn into an Outpost (P).

A Ruined City (Y)[]

20 generated by worldgen.

These are similar to the Deserted Town, but with more inhabitants and loot.

An Old House (H)[]

10 generated by worldgen.

These often contain a few useful items and low level enemies.

A Forgotten Battlefield (F)[]

5 generated by worldgen.

Find weapons and ammo here, such as Bullets and the Laser Rifle.

Note that once visited, you will not be able to return to the battlefield, even if there are still items remaining there.

A Huge Borehole (B)[]

10 generated by worldgen.

Find Alien Alloy here. It's described as a large hole, "evidence of the past harvest".

Note that the amount of Alloy is random (between 1 and 3). When finding a low number, the player can run out of meat/water and "reset" the borehole, thus allowing another chance to find more.

A Crashed Ship (W)[]

1 generated by worldgen.

An alien ship. Reach the ship and salvage it to unlock An Old Starship, another menu option.

The Sulphur Mine (S)[]

1 generated by worldgen.

Clear the Sulphur Mine to use Sulphur Miners, who create 1 Sulphur every ten seconds at the cost of 1 Cured Meat. The player will encounter tough military enemies here, including a boss with 80 HP and 10 damage - although they may receive a rare Bayonet for killing him.

The Coal Mine (C)[]

1 generated by worldgen.

Clear the Coal Mine to use Coal Miners, who produce 1 Coal at the cost of 1 Cured Meat. The player will encounter a few men and a chief (who has slightly higher HP than the men).

The Iron Mine (I)[]

1 generated by worldgen.

Have to kill a beast to unlock

Clear the Iron Mine to use Iron Miners, who create 1 Iron for at the cost of Cured Meat.

A Destroyed Village (U)[]

Find a supply cache here with items that seem randomly selected from your last game's storeroom. It only appears on the map after you complete the game once.

A Ravaged Battleship (X)[]

1 generated by worldgen.

Killing the military forces within will provide the Fabricator, a new crafting system, and enable the player to explore other areas of the Battleship.

The Battleship contains four areas;

  1. Engineering
  2. Medical
  3. Martial
  4. Command Deck

These areas contain resources (including Alien Alloy), weapons, blueprints for the Fabricator, and enemies. The Command Deck can only be accessed after all other areas have been cleared.

After all four areas have been cleared, the Battleship will turn into an Outpost (P).
